Yes I know it's not a Buick, it's a new Holden Monaro so it's related. But take a closer look at the picture, it features our own BCCA Historian, Eric North grinning from ear to ear after having just completed as a passenger some very fast laps around the circuit.

The people in the photo are Peter Brock with Eric in front of the Monaro and at back, l to r Garth Tander, Steven Richards, Rick Kelly, Jason Bright.

Wer'e all green with envy Eric.

The Buick Tank
Our New Zealand correspondent, Geoff Heaps sent these pictures of the "Buick Tank" which is quite a landmark that can be seen from the road at a property outside Oamaru in South Island, New Zealand. It seems the late John Buick a farmer from Oamaru was also a Buick car enthusiast and even had the Buick logo painted on a tank on his property.

Steve Leonard produced this rare advertisment for a 1932 Buick with “Wizzard Control”. Judging by the dealers address it would seem that the Advertisment comes from Hong Kong.

Buick Division Gnome - last seen in Western Australia
Pictures were taken on the South West Tour after the National Meet on our way to Donnybrook. The WA Club had a dedication ceremony at Gnomesville for the GMC (Gnomesville Motor Corp) Buick Division Gnome. After spending some time here waiting for the rest of the mob to arrive, we eventually spoke to a local about the unusual spectacle on the side of the road. He said that the local Council decided to put in a roundabout on a very narrow lonely country road (this confused the locals no end.. They thought it was such a joke that they put a couple of gnomes in the middle of the roundabout. Well, as the story goes, some youths decided it would be fun to trash the gnomes, so they did. The locals complained to the Council on the vandalism. So, the Council decided it would provide a proper area for the locals to display their gnomes, which it did, on the side of the road next to the roundabout. Well, this got known far and wide. So, now many, many people visit the site and bring along their own gromes, with a dedication as to why they are there. There are many and varied reasons and very whimsical, comical and a lot of fun. The site would now house thousands of gnomes and visited by many and is a real tourist spot. Story & Pics, Dawn Castle

1931 Buick when new in Mexico

The Website receives many enquiries and is often asked to identify cars or parts. Recently José Pedro Camus from Mexico asked if we could identify some cars in his collection of family pictures dating back to his grandfather who was a Mexican General in the Revolution. There were Cadillacs and Dodges and this beautiful 1931 Buick 8 in the snow. It is interesting to note the car carries 1931 Texas registeration so it was near new when photographed.

Gas as a fuel wasn’t always bottled!

This picture of a veteran Buick (possibly 1916), contributed by Marc McInnes, is from a very early English “Autocar” magazine. The caption reads GAS BAG CAR of the type frequently seen in Great Britain during the war of 1914-18. The model illustrated is a 6-cylinder Buick adapted by Osborne and Co, Ltd. A gas capacity of 100 cubic feet was equivalent to only half a gallon of petrol; coal gas was the fuel used.
Imagine needing to carry such a large load and the gas only has enough energy to drive about 9 or 10 miles, slowly at that!

What a find! Yes they are still about!

The grin on club member Michael Mackay’s face said it all when he picked-up this rare 1928 Buick Master Opera Coupe, model 28-58, one of only 11 right hand drive cars built. Located in Sydney and previously unkown to the Club, it came from a deceased estate and had been stored in a garage for many years. Quite a lot of restoration work had been completed some 20 to 30 years ago, now Michael can’t wait to get started.

Members Fees Due Now!

Well, it is that time of the year again. It is time for all members of the Buick Car Club of Australia Inc in NSW to pay their membership renewal fee of $40.00 (that is in Australian Dollars). For overseas members please remember to add $20 for postage.

Financial members of this club receive a copy of The Buick News each month, are covered on club outings by the club’s public liability insurance (which is needed in addition to your vehicle’s CTP and any other insurance you might have on your car). You are also entitled to register your vehicle on conditional registration provided the vehicle is at least 30 years old. Conditional registration is an inexpensive way to register the car you might use occasionally rather than daily and although it has its limitations there are still a number of positive reasons for its use.

There are many more reasons to continue to be a member of the club such as the camaraderie at many club functions including the Port Macquarie rally later this year with Queensland members (and any others who care to attend) and of course next year’s National Rally.

If you wanted to read about the history of Buicks or check out past issues of the Buick News or read any number of publications about these great cars then you can as a member contact our Librarian and see what he has in store! Don’t forget too that the club has our own website which is http://www.buickclub.org.au/. It’s a cool site – check it out!!

Members requiring renewal of their membership, everyone even those people who joined the club recently, please make a cheque or money order as follows:

The Buick Car Club of Australia Inc in NSW.

Then complete the Membership Renewal Form enclosed in this issue of The Buick News, pop both form and payment into a stamped envelope and mail to:

The Treasurer
The Buick Car Club of Australia Inc in NSW - P.O. Box 168, Merrylands, NSW, 2160 Australia

I know we all get busy and sometimes forget to organise that membership renewal, please don’t forget this year because after August unpaid members won’t be receiving any of the club benefits, including their monthly magazine.

Thank you
Virginia Russell,
Treasurer

VALE - Jim Lewis

Our good friend and long time member, Jim Lewis, passed away on 28th November, at the age of 94 years.

Jim has been our oldest active member for quite some time now, driving his wonderful 1912 Buick (both of them born the same year). Jim’s last outing with the Club was for our Centenary Display at Eastern Creek. His knowledge and humourous wit will be sadly missed.

Jim’s collection of cars was spread over different marques and he was still restoring a veteran Morris. Jim was one of nature’s true gentlemen and will be fondly remembered throughout the Club.

This rally of approximately 126 miles, and the first of the spring season in Southern Germany, was the Buick’s first European event in the hands of its new and proud owner and the Buick had the honor of being the oldest car in the rally.

Cars of the Stars, Napier New Zealand
Your Webmaster and the lovely Barbara have been on a cruise to celebrate 50 years of wedded bliss and when the cruise ship left the Port of Napier in New Zealand it was farewelled by a local Jazz band and swing dancers on the dock. The photo was taken from the cabin balcony and the cars pictured were the transport of the stars. Note the 1938 Buick, second from left.

Thanks Mike, I made it Down Under - Love Mum
Our Website received this lovely eMail from Mike Herwig of California ”I discovered a photo of old buicks in a family album and had the photo enlarged because it shows my mother about the age of twenty two. I remember mum saying she was employed by the McLaughlin Buick agency in Windsor, Ontario Canada. I was curious about the year of the cars so I went on the web and found your club site. The cars in the photo look like your member Dave’s 1917 DX 45 and I believe the diamond shaped badge on the radiator says McLaughlin not Buick. I mailed a copy of this photo to your club today as mum always wanted to go to Australia and now she has.”
Thanks Mike for sharing this with us, and yes we agree, 1917 McLaughlin Buick is the right identification.

GM Day 2008 - Car of the Day
At the recent GM Day at Penrith Panthers, Sydney for GM’s 100th Anniversary a special time-line of representative GM vehicles was displayed. The extensive line-up ranged from a very early veteran Cadillac to a current model Hummer. But it was the beautiful 1912 Buick, model 36, of Graham Weekes that took out the coverted “GM’s Car of the Day” trophy which was presented to Graham by Eve Lauter from GM’s Holden Public Relations.

1929 Buick, first car officially to cross the new Glenhaven Rd Bridge.

The Official Opening of the new Glenhaven Road Bridge on the Sunday before Christmas when the formal opening was by the Mayor of Baulkham Hills. The ribbon was cut with a sword by the young lad riding the horse (Disabled School of Riding) and first car officially across the bridge was the 1929 Buick belonging to your webmaster. It represented the first bridge built in 1930. The Morris Minor and the Volkswagen represented the second, one way at a time, bridge built in 1950. At the rear is the Mayor’s new Holden Statesman (the same car, made here, is sold in China badged as the new Buick Park Avenue.)

Yves Beaufays from Brussels, Belgium sent this historic Buick photo to the website. The photo, taken on April 4th, 1939, was found amongst old family papers and whilst little is known about the car it has the Belgian Army logo on the rear door. Yves is wondering if it could be a McLaughlin Buick.

1929 Buick Expert Visits Down Under
Bill McLaughlin (from the Canadian Buick McLaughlin family), who publishes the 1929 Silver Anniversary Newsletter, is paying Australia a visit for the first time and in all his experience has seen for the first time several of the surviving 1929 model 29-24 roadsters. He is pictured behind the wheel of the webmaster’s wire wheeled restored example. The 29-24’s were only made in Australia and were fitted with Holden bodies on the small series running gear. There are a dozen surviving examples in Australia plus one in New Zealand and one in South Africa. There is no evidence that this model was ever produced in North America or seen there.

1922 Buick sees service with the Chile Andes Mining Company Railway
Pablo Moraga Feliu from Chile sent this historic Buick photo to the website with a request to assist with year and model identification. The photo, was taken in 1927 and what a great historic photo it is. Because of the railway modifications it is difficult to be 100% accurate with identification, however, the 12 stud rear hub indicates a 3/4 floating differential which was only fitted to the small Buicks of the period and the headlight shape was last used in 1922 so the subject car should be a 1922 Buick, 4 cylinder, model 22-37.
Thanky you Pablo for sharing thios moment of history with us.

2008 Holden Coupe 60 Concept Show Car

At the GM Day held at Caloundra on Queensland’s beautiful Sunshine Coast for the celebration of GM’s 100th birthday and Holden’s 60th birthday, Holden proudly displayed their newest concept car, the Coupe 60. This GM celebration formed part of the 2008 Buick Nationals and although the Coupe 60 is not a Buick it could be seen as Buick’s great, great Australian grandson. It is 95 years since the first Australian bodied GM cars, 1913 Buicks, were produced and sold by McIntosh and Sons of Sydney, many years before the Holden family started their Holden Motor Body Builder business.

Brand New 1927 Buick Coach, model 27-20

From the Lambert family album, Tim Lambert has forwarded this valuable piece of Australian Buick history.  It is a great photo and in excellent condition for it's age. TheBuick is clearly very new when the photo was taken, perhaps not even yet registered as there are no lables or front number plate and the tyre treads are very pronounced. The car is a Holden bodied (Australian built) 1927 Buick Standard Six coach (that is a 2 door, 5 seat, sedan type car with bucket seats in front).  This was a popular body style at that time costing £445 as opposed to £510 for the 4 door sedan. Taken in Katoomba in 1927, it is thought the lady in the Buick is Margaret Cascadden a friend of Tim’s grandmother. Thank you Tim for sharing with us.

Buick - The Australian Story
A “MUST READ” for all Buick enthusiasts and readers with a special interest in GM’s early Australian history.

With the Foreword by former Holden Public Affairs Manager, Marcus McInnes

Buick, the affordable car to aspire to. Favoured by Australians from the man in the street and the motor enthusiast through to Prime Ministers and ultimately the Govenor General.
