1923 - Lowell Thomas “Into Forbidden Afghanistan in a Buick”
Lowell Thomas was an American writer, broadcaster, adventurer and traveler, perhaps best known as the man who made Lawrence of Arabia famous. Look him up on Wikipedia, his is an interesting story.
In 1923 Thomas succeeded in obtaining permission to travel into Afghanistan to make a documentary film of this forbidden country. His trip started by entering through the Khyber Pass in his newly acquired 1923 Buick Six tourer. General Motors Export Co. published the story of this adventure in the magazine “The Motor in Australia” on September 1, 1924. You can read this article (with photographs) by clicking here - Lowell Thomas in Afghanistan.pdf

Now an AUSTRALIAN Buick Book
Buick - The Australian Story
A “MUST READ” for all Buick enthusiasts and readers with a special interest in GM’s early Australian history.

With the Foreword by former Holden Public Affairs Manager, Marcus McInnes

Buick, the affordable car to aspire to. Favoured by Australians from the man in the street and the motor enthusiast through to Prime Ministers and ultimately the Govenor General. This is Buick’s Australian history from its introduction here prior to General Motors, through its period of immense popularity in the 1920s to becoming the Doctor and General manager’s car in the 1930s and 1940s and finally the enthusiast’s and collector’s car in later years. Buick was General Motors main product and cash cow in Australia until the mid 1920s, therefore Buick’s Australian history is virtually inseparable from GM’s early Australian history. This story provides an in depth insite into GM’s entry and establishment in Australia prior to WW II and the introduction of the Holden car.

Written in chronological format covering Buicks presence and impact in Australia from the very early 1900’s through to the present day. The text in lay terms covers Buick models, how Buicks were sold, who sold them and who bought them. There are many stories of epic Buick travel, particularly in the vintage and veteran years together with Buick’s unique Australian designed and built body styles and purpose built work and professional cars. This 457 page story is illustrated with 750 B&W photographs (many period pictures), plus 450 other images including early advertising and sales literature.
